Chapter Sixteen

TONYA

Lisa’s husband decided to fly in for Christmas, but was only successful in upsetting their children and just barely escaped Lisa’s brothers taking him out back for a ‘talk.’ The ones who were hurt the most were Dawn and BJ; they didn’t want to leave from their mother’s presence and didn’t believe anything their father told them. I warned my best friend about talking about Brian around the kids, no matter how angry she was. Now the children know that he cheated, and for the most part, Dawn is the only one who might understand what that really meant. At the age of 10, most children know a lot more than we did at that age. I explained all of this to my husband while we sat in the kitchen having a light lunch once our sons returned to school.

“Sorry to hear that Lisa and Brian couldn’t work it out…those children will have a lot to figure out over the years. What’s going on with Denise? I can’t believe that girl waited until she was almost 50 to have another baby,” Gary joked, shaking his head.

“Forty-five, Sweety…if she’s almost 50, so are we,” I smiled. “Denise said she’s going to give the baby up for adoption as soon as it’s born. I couldn’t imagine doing something like that no matter how old I am…maybe I should adopt the baby?”

“Oh, no you don’t; we’re not raising any more babies…”

“Mom you’re having a baby?” Monét asked as she walked into kitchen.

“Have you gone and lost your ever loving mind? There will be no more babies born in this house. Do you hear your daughter?” I asked Gary.

“Well who’s having a baby?”

“One of your mother’s crazy friends, and your mother is thinking about adopting it…now remember, she just said there will be no more babies born in this house,” Gary commented as he got up from his chair.

“Auntie Denise is having a baby?” Monét asked excitedly. “That’s so cool! I want to baby sit.”

“Didn’t have to tell her which crazy friend I was talking about, did I?” Gary found that point hilarious, laughing on his way to the den to watch TV.

“For real, Mom, you’re going to adopt Auntie Denise’s baby?”

“No!” Gary yelled from the den.

Monét and I laugh and discuss Denise’s baby and what she may have this time. Still, I could not wrap my mind around the fact that my friend was having a baby at our age. She did tell me the baby was on the small side and her doctor was concerned, but Denise was glad she only had a few months left to be pregnant. Leaving the church she joined with no intentions of finding another one as if the church actually had something to do with the decision she made to sleep with someone she’s not married to and unprotected. Denise was livid when I reminded her she did the same thing with Tyree and ended up having Amir. I guess the more things changed, the more they remained the same.
